Easter Morning Tragedy

topic posted Sun, April 8, 2007 - 10:35 AM by  Unsubscribed
Early in the morning of April 8, 2007 tragedy struck the Black Rock International Burner Hostel. Shortly after 5am, a fire broke out in Fred's main RV which was parked in front of his home. Within minutes the RV was engulfed in flames, and spreading to the second RV parked adjacent in the driveway. Moments later the flames started up the roof of our beloved friends home. Fire and police personnel responded very quickly, and were able to contain the fire before it had spread to the entire house - despite efforts from Fred and a heroic effort by Metric and the hostel guests.

It is five hours later and there are now two hulking, burnt RVs parked in front of the hostel, a fire damaged sedan, and the front of the house has sustained some fire and water damage. The emotional energy is low today. Peeps do not apply. This is only the beginning of a long process of cleaning, disposing of the remains, collecting what may be salvageable from those remains, and the rebuilding that will occur between now and August.

Many of you know and love, Hagey. This is an unprecedented tragedy of the highest magnitude, and all of my sympathies are with him this Easter. Organizational efforts to support this good man and what he has done for our community will begin immediately. Right now, it is just a shock. I can't get the sound of the unspent rounds stored in a cupboard pop, pop, popping in the searing heat of the flames and being completely at the mercy of the fire. Waking up to Fred's cries and alarm this morning will be with me forever.

Please note: those little water hoses coming out of your house and the little fire extinguisher in your kitchen are next to worthless against this type of blaze. Too little, too late. Three large fire tanks were emptied into this blaze.

More information coming soon.

I'm sorry to hear of the upset. I only hope that, in the spirit of spring and rebirth, this will eventually be viewed as an opportunity for growth rather than as a loss.

    Blessings,

Hana, I did hear rumors that the Kiwi van got hit too, sorry! :( Poor Hagey, what really shit luck. Does anyone know how it started? I'm all up for donating to a PayPal to help out with some of the repairs. Does Hagey still have the account set up from last year's camp fees? Perhaps we could use that one?

Sandman has posted a couple of pics in the photos of this tribe just in case you've missed them.

Sandman, I've linked to both pics and your post on the BRIBH forum, hope you don't mind!

hmmm so seems hagey dont want any kind of pay pal set up

"Thanks so much for the concern, but, please, I do not wish to seem like a charity case. This is a big personal loss, but I am a proud and independant man, the loss will be partially offset by insurance, and I do not wish to be making any public appeals for money." - Hagey as said on hostel forum

Still sending him lots of love though

That's the only thing with living so far away. The only thing we can possibly do is reach for our wallets. Why don't we have personal teleportation devices yet?

I know... and Hagey is that kind of person, all heart, all giving. When you look at the bad luck he's had at times, it breaks my heart... NO one, esp, no one that giving, should have to go through this much SHIT .

Something we should do - incognito and whatnot. You know he's gonna say no no no, but like Roamer sed, a lot of the time a lot of the folks who he has helped out so much are so far away that ya can't just get in the car and drive an hour and pitch in a hand like those of us stateside can do...

Anyway... it's not charity... it's love. We're working on ideas on another site now... will keep you updated.

Okay here is the scoop - sort of.

No PayPal at the moment. The hostel does have an account for camp dues, but not donations. Other people ARE working this angle. What Fred could use most at the moment is a hand from anyone in the Reno/Sparks area. There is a big mess in front of the house, and he's there by himself at the moment. If you need contact info, please message me. I won't post it here for privacy.

In other news, we will be working out plans for the 2nd Annual Black Rock International Burner Hostel Easter Burn in the very near future.

    Stay cool. More soon.

I will donate as soon as i'm paid on friday. I've never had the pleasure of staying at the hostel but...
    • Keep em coming:)

      Wed, April 11, 2007 - 7:23 AM
Fourteen donations as of this morning. Cool to watch the timing...a couple from NZ right off, then London, then US, then again from some Kiwis, a couple more from London--like watching the world turn, and sprinkle goodness on Hagey. We'll leave this thread open for a couple more days, then hit Hagey with a nice big wad of help. Thanks, everyone, very inspiring to see folks chip in like this! Let's keep the doors on the International Burner Hostel open for business!
      • How do i specify...?

        Wed, April 11, 2007 - 3:54 PM
I don't see a way thru paypal to specify that the payment is for the Hostel....
Only to specify that it is for "service/other," "goods," "cash advance," or "ebay item"...

Should a mark one of those to signify it is for Hagey? or is there a website i should be coming thru instead of going straight to paypal?

Service other will work...and now for your:

          Thursday Morning Update!

A dozen more donations overnight, one from as far away as Turkey!

My favorite, though, had this message attached to it:

"very sorry to hear of your loss. This will be my first BM, and I hope to meet you. Regards, John"

Get this--he'd never even MET HAGEY OR BEEN TO THE EVENT, and still sent a big wad o'cash.

There's your Karmic payback, for ya.

We'll leave this open one more day, then get the goods off to Hagey.

Thanks, everyone, very inspiring to see people react this way.

I mostly enter 000000 for my ZIP code when US sites ask for one. Or you can use
            www.nzpost.co.nz/Cultures/...odeFinder/
to look your postcode up. (e.g. Kingsland is 1021)

That paypal is really hard to use though. You have to register, go to profile and add a credit card before you can make payment.
            • Friday morning update

              Fri, April 13, 2007 - 9:29 AM
Another eight contributions yesterday, including another from England, one from Italy, and a couple very generous ones that wanted to remain anonymous. I'll tally it up tomorrow during the Green Man open house, and we'll see how we've done! Incredible to see this outpouring of love and support for someone who's given so much to the community.

This makes me reflect on the Yahoo thread going, and the theme through it--people change when people take time to hold a mirror up to their actions, and let them see themselves. And that's exactly what's happening now--you're holding a mirror up to Hagey, and what he's seeing is simply beautiful.

                Bump.

Yes I know accepting donations can be rough. But for something like this, It's one step to keeping the vision going.
I appreciate the burner hostel's actions, it's saved lots of friends along the way during journeys so I'm bumping.
