CONTROLLED BURN, INC. TO PRESENT "SHUTTER FIRE: PHOTOGRAPHY IN FIRE ARTS" SHOW OPENING AT DREAMER'S COFFEE HOUSE JUNE 1

Reno, Nev., May 21, 2008 – Controlled Burn invites you to view the hottest art show in Reno. Introducing "Shutter Fire: Photography in Fire Arts", to be held from June 5-July 31st at Dreamers Coffee House (17 S Virginia St) in downtown Reno. In support of Reno's Inaugural Fire Arts Festival to be held July 19, view amazing art by local and regional photographers who have captured amazing and sometimes frightening interplay of humans interacting with fire. Inspired by Controlled Burn's invitation to judge this year's Fire Arts Photography contest held by Trick Concepts, a California-based company specializing in fire art fabrication and specialization, this amazing display of fire features some of the winners of this year's contest as well as honorable mentions. Local artists including Bill Kozitsky, Michael Herzog, Pat Herz, Saverio Cine, and Shone Jensen will also be featured with special guest Abjectphoto from New York. Dreamer's Coffee House is known for their support of local and regional artists, and we are very excited to collaborate with them on this project. This incredible show is sponsored by Great Basin Color and Conservation. Prints range from the abstract to the sublime.

This is an amazing opportunity for people who haven't been exposed to fire art to study and experience it in a safe way that nevertheless conveys the fascination with fire we all seem to have. Come down to the cool comfort of Dreamers Coffee House and enjoy the work of these amazing artists!

Refreshments
Wine and light snacks will served at the opening on June 5, 2008 at 6pm.

THE ART OF FREEDOM
An Interdisciplinary Arts Conference

August 28, 2008
Black Rock City, Nevada

How can we recognize, articulate, and navigate the politics of art and freedom? What are the roles of our communities, cultures, and societies in enabling or restricting arts and freedoms? What freedoms are needed to enable artistic expression? What limitations do we struggle against to achieve artistic freedom? How can freedom be experienced as a form of art? Can art create freedom?

THE ART OF FREEDOM is an Interdisciplinary Arts Conference that will take place on August 28, 2008 in Black Rock City, Nevada at Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Scholars and creative thinkers from all levels of education and experience are invited to submit proposals for panel presentations. Conference sessions will typically consist of panels of three 20-minute paper presentations, but we are also open to proposals with creative and unusual presentation formats (feel free to think outside the box!)

Possible presentation topics might include (but are not limited to):

* Inquiries related to Art, Freedom, and the “American Dream.”
* Considerations of Burning Man and its relation to culture, society, law, or politics.
* Discussions of specific Burning Man Art installations or projects.
* Presentations on censorship in relation to artistic freedom.
* Proposals for new directions in activism related to art and freedom.
* Explorations of the relationships between subcultural expression and “mainstream” cultures.

These are just a few sample topics – we are open to considering any presentation that offers an engaged and/or creative approach to the conference theme.

The conference will be hosted by Freedomcommunity at Burning Man, and all participants should be familiar with the unique conditions of the Black Rock City environment. Note that the minimum cost for attending Burning Man is over $300, so participants should already have plans to attend the festival or should be prepared to embrace the festival in its fullness.

For more information, please contact David Higgins, Glaukopis Conference Coordinator: (glaukopisproject@gmail.com).

Abstracts of 250 words should be sent to (glaukopisproject@gmail.com) no later than June 30, 2008.

Notification will be sent regarding accepted proposals in early July.

After much deliberation, and the unfortunate combination of a variety of factors, we regret to inform you that the Black Rock International Burner Hostel Theme Camp has been cancelled for Burning Man 2008.

Hagey, Kiwi, and myself, Irish, have regretfully been forced into this decision by a wide variety of factors, and we have not taken this
decision lightly. The Burner Hostel has operated and grown for nine years now, but it has not been easy. Every year, we have put in huge amounts of time, effort, and money, and sadly, this is no longer sustainable. Kiwi and myself are no longer able to justify the large
impact that running a large project on a different continent has on our default world lives, while Hagey, after years of basing the
camp out of his home, no longer has the energy or desire to do what he would need to do to sustain the momentum of the BRIBH, and wants to pursue some other dreams while he is still young enough, and healthy enough, and has enough rapidly diminishing capital left, to do so.

The BRIBH has only ever been possible through the use of Hagey's place in Sparks, but this has entailed the total conversion of his house from a home into a virtual military base in the months prior to the burn. While this is great fun for everyone who comes over to the Burn, it represents an 3 month period of the year where Hagey is unable to enjoy the use of his home, has no privacy, puts him at stressful odds with neighbors and local authorities, and consumes his financial resources, personal energy, and so on. After 11 years, Hagey needs his personal space back, and sadly, without a base in the Reno area, this camp is just not feasible.

Kiwi and I share many of the same feelings as Hagey - for the past 4 years, we have willingly and enjoyably helped construct and expand the BRIBH, but to do so, we have had to assume huge responsibility, sacrifice our own time and much of our own money, and have suffered a serious reduction in our ability to enjoy burningman itself. We feel that we have given enough to the Burner Hostel, and would like to go to burningman without any responsiblities, to just have fun!!! Not an unreasonable position, as we hope you agree...

The combination of these factors - Hagey needing his life back, Kiwi and I wanting to enjoy Burningman more than we have been, has rendered the Burner Hostel a non-viable proposition for 2008. We hope you understand, and do not feel too bad about this. As it is only April, you should have plenty of time to find another camp to join, or to join forces with other Campmates.

Therefore, in order to allow previous hostel campmates to communicate amongst themselves and make alternative arrangements, we will be leaving the website and bulletin board up for now... Either way, we do hope to see you at Burning Man 2008, having a great
time, the sort of great time we hope to be having ouselves!! Thanks for being involved with the Black Rock International Burner
Hostel, and good luck!!

Whether the BRIBH will rise from the ashes and be reborn, in glory, for the 2009 Burn, is entirely up to the REST of the BRIBH Family.
The BRIBH is a Beautiful Thing and deserves to be preserved.

Much Love,
Hagey, Kiwi, & Irish

Early in the morning of April 8, 2007 tragedy struck the Black Rock International Burner Hostel. Shortly after 5am, a fire broke out in Fred's main RV which was parked in front of his home. Within minutes the RV was engulfed in flames, and spreading to the second RV parked adjacent in the driveway. Moments later the flames started up the roof of our beloved friends home. Fire and police personnel responded very quickly, and were able to contain the fire before it had spread to the entire house - despite efforts from Fred and a heroic effort by Metric and the hostel guests.

It is five hours later and there are now two hulking, burnt RVs parked in front of the hostel, a fire damaged sedan, and the front of the house has sustained some fire and water damage. The emotional energy is low today. Peeps do not apply. This is only the beginning of a long process of cleaning, disposing of the remains, collecting what may be salvageable from those remains, and the rebuilding that will occur between now and August.

Many of you know and love, Hagey. This is an unprecedented tragedy of the highest magnitude, and all of my sympathies are with him this Easter. Organizational efforts to support this good man and what he has done for our community will begin immediately. Right now, it is just a shock. I can't get the sound of the unspent rounds stored in a cupboard pop, pop, popping in the searing heat of the flames and being completely at the mercy of the fire. Waking up to Fred's cries and alarm this morning will be with me forever.

Please note: those little water hoses coming out of your house and the little fire extinguisher in your kitchen are next to worthless against this type of blaze. Too little, too late. Three large fire tanks were emptied into this blaze.

More information coming soon.

"FLY-IN" CAMP MATES WANTED

I would like to tell Burners about my idea to make travelling to the Playa a bit easier and less complicated. There are about ten spots available in our camp for the long distance Burners that are flying to the Playa.

I own a small trucking company in the SF Bay area. I drive the truck and trailer to the Playa each year. Needless to say, this gives us a maximum hauling capabilities, yet my wife and I enjoy a small camp. Our friends on the east coast have told us how great it is not to worry about shipping or bringing gear and equipment coast to coast. This year I have dedicated half the camp to those flying to Burning Man from afar.

The backbone of our camp is two 20' sea containers that I bring from San Francisco and are totally packed with equipment and gear. The sea containers are placed parallel on the Playa, tarps and carpeting are added to create "the common area". It is equipped with propane cook stoves, a kitchen sink with running water, lights, pots, pans and utensils. We bring 600 gallons of potable water for drinking, cooking, and showers. The shower is heated and pressurized with an RV pump. This truly is a luxuryon the Playa!

Our shade structure is outstanding. It is in 12' x 24' modular units, we usually attach eight units creating up to a 24' x 96' structure that shades the tents. We utilize LED lighting at night. The camp operates primarily with propane and batteries, using the generators minimally to recharge batteries. We have a satellite phone, although the per minute usage is a bit imposing. Last year we had free wi-fi that was quite fun.

We have and transport individual tents and Playa bikes for each "Fly-in". My bike mechanic just shook his head when I told him I needed ten more Playa bikes.
.
You supply your BM ticket, total transportation and food. We are definitely a "self reliant" camp where everyone cooks for themselves, cleans their own mess, does their own thing, while respecting the camp and equipment.

First timers are very welcome. We are more than willing to share our advice and experiences to make the best possible preparations for the Playa and traveling. We keep the camp small, usually less than twenty. We choose not to be a theme camp. This shall be the tenth Burn for my wife and I.

The camp fee is $300 per person and an additional $100 equipment deposit to cover the repair and/or replacement of items that are damaged, lost, stolen or just "I can't remember where I left the bike last night!" situations.

There are photos of the camp on my profile. To read the complete descriptive text that is attached to the picture, the photo must be enlarged. The reason there are so many photos of the shade structures, is that I have been selling shade structures for several years and hauling them to the Playa for other camps.

Please pass this along if you know someone on the fence due to the logistics of getting stuff out here. If you have suggestions, comments or ideas on how I can improve this, I would enjoy hearing it.
.
Email for more info,

Thanks

In just one week's time, folks from literally around the world have chipped in their nickels, dimes and quarters to raise a big wad 'o cash for Hagey and the International Burner Hostel.
The total: $1,638!! Click here to see a photo of the check ( now will someone tell me where to send it, or offer to sneaker net it up to Reno?)
Almost as impressive is the outpouring of love and sentiment--especially from so many who haven't even met Hagey or even been to the event! It's clear the IBH and Hagey have touched many, many lives. Here's a sampling with identifying remarks removed:

--If I were going overseas I'd hope someone could help me like Hagey helps others. The fire was HORRIBLE, and I'm just glad I can help out.

--For everything he has done over the years, this is merely a token of my appreciation, but I hope it helps.

--very sorry to hear of your loss. This will be my first BM, and I hope to meet you. Regards, John

--I am currently in Turkey on a fellowship with the STate Dept (teaching)....but - wanted to send out some support.

--Hang in there Hagey, we'll meet soon at Burning Man! Hugs, D. from Italy

- -Please accept this small gift. I have never met you, but thanks for living the BM ethic. Hope you bounce back better and stronger.

--Best of luck rebuilding! (From Nicole P...never actually been to the hostel, but am so glad it's there!!!!)

--You're fabulous. Thank you for making Burningman better & possible for so many.

--Without the hostel (Fred especially) I would never have made it to Burning Man and my life would be on a very different path indeed. Its not alot but is all I got. From Scotland with love

Thanks, everyone, for your contributions, and rest assured that when the time comes and Hagey's ready to accept pillows, sleeping bags, etc, someone will post on this list.

I MUST find a place to stay. Someone is willing to pay my airfare from Chicago, but I have to find a place to stay to be able to go! COSM is roughly 27th Street and 10th Ave in West Manhattan. Please message me ASAP if you have a floor or bed I can crash on. I only need a 6' by 3' place to rest my weary danced out body from 5am'ish 'til Noon'ish.

For those of you who are familiar with www.couchsurfing.com, the next Collective will be meeting in New Zealand in the coming months. Currently, we're scouring the countryside - from North to South, and any-which-way, trying to find a town / city / village / wonderful space to spend the next several months.

If anyone has traveled to New Zealand, or lives there currently, we'd love any and all suggestions on places to live.
Some criteria:
Infrastructure (access to quality groceries, transportation, **internet access**, etc)
Reasonable rents / local survival expenses
Proximity to a larger city (not essential)
And then ideally - sunsets, beaches, waterfalls and gold pouring from the heavens, right?

For more information on CouchSurfing, the Collective, and what we're going for, check out the following message board.
http://www.couchsurfing.com/group.html?gid=3602

We want to get to know the country, the villages, the people, the everything as fully and soon as possible! So, post any-and-all New Zealand related suggestions, travel stories, wonderful experiences, relatives with free housing for us(*wink*), in this topic, or on the CS board.

Thanks a million, and happy travels!

And if you haven't found Couch Surfing yet... then you just did! A community of over 120,000, opening their couches and homes to the compelling philosopher & savvy traveler in all of us. See what you think!

Initial thoughts are to land in Amsterdam, then make my way to Boom.
After that, i'd like to go to Barcelona, or maybe Morocco if i find a travel companion, and maybe even do a motorcyle trip!
Haven't booked flights yet, waiting to see what connections i can make where...

I've travelled thru europe many times, but over 8 years ago... I speak french, english and spanish (mas o menos!)

Please send me a message if you are in these areas and would be open to hosting me, or at least meeting with me and giving me some pointers...

blessings!

You can also e-mail him (he's part of my friends list) if you have any other questions or concerns. If you're going out to the playa this year this might be another really great way for you to participate.

I'll be doing this and the 2 mile dragon......This is the year of fabric for me...or so it would seam.

Introduction

In November of 2005 Space Imaging, Inc released an image of Black Rock City 2005. Their Ikonos satellite acquired the image at a resolution between 1 and 4 meters. As I scrolled through the image I relaized that I could locate my tent, a 2 meter by 2 meter square. Later in the day, while chatting with a friend, I commented that I wished the resolution was better so that I could see what was on the ground. This led to a discussion of perhaps writing something on top of the bus that was in our camp. Eventually I realized that we needed to do this on a larger scale, maybe arranging the tents in camp to make a symbol or spell something out. This led to the idea of creating a piece of art that would only be visible from the satellite that took this picture.

Concept

Create a large scale artwork which can only be entirely visualized from a great distance. This artwork would be 100 meters long by 100 meters wide and would consist of 10,000 square of colored material arranged to produce an image 100 pixels by 100 pixels. The images used below are only representative and are not going to be used at the event.

We want to create a very large image on the floor of the desert that will be photographed by a satellite.
It'll need the participation of all of you.
Signup on the web site and tell us how many pixels you can bring.
Please visit sputnik.name for more information.
For this project a pixel is a piece of fabric 44 inches square
You bring your part of the image out to the project location and help fasten it into place.
